The City of Black Hawk, also known as “the City of Mills,” is nestled in the scenic Rocky Mountains, located 18 miles west of Golden, Colorado.  This historic city, which was incorporated in 1864, grew from the “gold rush days” and prospered as a milling town.  In 1991 the City became one of three destination locations in Colorado where limited stakes gambling was legalized.  The city is now the premier gambling venue in Colorado and is home to 22 casinos hosting 20,000 visitors a day.  Black Hawk is known for its warm and friendly hospitality and is a “must see” city for tourist visiting Colorado and the Rocky Mountains.    

The Black Hawk Police Department is the largest Police Department in Gilpin County with 38 full time police employees.  Our members provide 24-hour law enforcement services while answering over 5,900 police calls for service a year.  The Black Hawk Police Department is located in a historic schoolhouse built in 1870 and modernized in the 1990’s to support our rapid growth. We attract and retain professional employees who are committed to providing great service to our citizens and guests.  We are proud of our City’s heritage and our role in making Black Hawk an enjoyable place to live, work and visit.  Community policing is not an abstract concept in the Black Hawk Police Department but is truly practiced everyday by our employees.  It’s our goal to have a positive impact on every citizen and visitor in our unique and colorful city.  Our pledge to every resident and visitor of Black Hawk is to provide exceptional service while performing ethically and professionally.
