Communications Unit - 911

The Black Hawk Communications Center was established in 1994, three years after limited gaming began in the City of Black Hawk. Originally, the Gilpin County Sheriff's Office dispatched emergency calls for the Black Hawk Police Department. The demand for county services and the need for personalized service in Black Hawk led to the creation of the City's first Communications Center. The Communications Center was first established on the first floor of the City's historic 1870 schoolhouse after it was converted into a police station in 1997. Today, Black Hawk Police Department dispatchers provide service for the Black Hawk Fire Department, the Gilpin Ambulance Authority, and the Black Hawk Police Department. The Center is still located in its original location, is staffed with seven (7) dispatchers, one communications supervisor, and is directed by the Administrative Commander.

The Communications Center is Phase 2 compliant and uses an E911 system to receive emergency calls. The Communications Center can receive Text-to-9-1-1 messages from the Speech and Hearing Impaired community and anyone in a situation where it is unsafe to speak on a mobile device. The Center also utilizes Hyper-Reach to provide emergency community phone notifications during emergencies. Learn more about Hyper-Reach. The non-emergency number for the Black Hawk Communications Center is (303) 582-5878, and emails can be directed to Commander Troy Cooper.
