In the mid-1900s, the City of Black Hawk purchased the Dory Hill Cemetery.
The earliest recorded birth dates back to 1787, to the honor of Aaron Cook Henderson, who lived to be 90 years old and died in 1877.
The earliest recorded death is that of Susanna Hoopes, who died in 1862.
You can look up their headstones using our interactive map below, which also includes a legend for veterans and unknown burials. Thanks to a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) project performed by Sentry Mapping back in 2023, we are able to locate our unknown burials, and thanks to dedicated staff time spent in the cemetery, going plot by plot in each lot and block, researching old records, and other resources, the City was able to identify 56 of those still marked with unknown locations.
The Cemetery is absolutely gorgeous in the Spring with flowers blooming. Walking through a cemetery may seem like a bizarre thing to do, but reading the headstones and seeing the dates of those who have passed tell numerous historical and interesting stories.
The cemetery is located off Dory Hill Road, across the street from the Gilpin Justice Center at 2960 Dory Hill Road.
